Light Station Dedication

A full day of activities is planned for Sunday, June 16, when the Port Washington Historical Society hosts the official dedication of new the tower and lantern for the Light Station, 311 Johnson St., Port Washington. The 2 p.m. dedication ceremony will include Luxembourg and Wisconsin dignitaries. There will be a concert in Veterans Park and a display of photographs of the restoration project. The day will end with a recognition dinner for donors, volunteers, Historical Society members, and guests including visitors from Iowa and members of the Luxembourg Society of Wisconsin at Country Inn Suites.

Among the Luxembourg visitors will be Jean Spautz, President of the Chamber of Deputies, Madame Erma Hennicot-Schoepges, Minister of Culture and Higher Education, Ambassador to the United States Arlette Paccoud Comzemius, Guy Dockendorf, Counsel to the Minister, Georges Calteux, Director of National Sites and Monuments, and Don Hansen, Consulate General of Luxembourg for Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The Troaterbattien, the Luxembourg band that has gained international recognition for their appearances throughout Europe and its travels in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa in 1990 and 1994 will also attend and entertain. The band will take part in the dedication program and will present a concert in Veterans Memorial Park on the Lake Michigan shoreline at 4 p.m. following the dedication ceremony. Ozaukee Big Band will also take part in the ceremony and the concert.

Port Washington Mayor Mark Gottlieb will welcome the visitors. We have notified the schedulers for Senator Herb Kohl, Senator Russ Feingold, Representative Jim Sensenbrenner and Governor Scott McCallum of the event. We will also invite county and local officials to attend the ceremony.

Cake and punch will be served after the ceremony. Restoration photographs and artifacts from the Light Station will be displayed at the American Legion clubhouse. Historic tours of downtown Port Washington will also be provided. Port Washington Yacht Club will serve food and refreshments during the afternoon program. All proceeds will go to the restoration fund. A shuttle bus will provide transportation from St. Peter’s Church parking lot on Wisconsin Street to the ceremony site.

There will also be transportation from the Light Station to the park. Parking will not be available on Johnson and Powers streets to allow room for people attending the ceremony and to ensure their safety. Shuttle bus signs will be posted. Gus Gnorski will be the master of ceremonies for the gala recognition dinner at Country Inn Suites. The evening will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Luxembourg Society of Wisconsin will provide dessert. The cost of the dinner is $30 per person. Reservations must be made before May 31. The choice of entrees are chicken marsala and filet mignon. Monday events

The Luxembourg Society has planned a Monday of sightseeing for the Luxembourg guests. Milwaukee stops and tours are planned at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory where government officials will meet the group. The Troaterbattien will present an 11 a.m. concert. Lunch will be served at the Domes. The afternoon stops include Miller Park before the group returns to Ozaukee County with stops at Suburban Motors Harley Davidson, Pioneer Village, Americanism Museum in Waubeka, Stony Hill School, St. Nicholas Church and cemetery and a drive through Holy Cross, Belgium and Lake Church. A farewell dinner will be held that evening at Memories, Highway LL, Town of Port Washington. Reservations will also be required for these two activities. The cost of the tour is $20. That includes the bus, entrance fees and lunch. The cost of the evening meal is $22. Sunday, June 16, Light Station Dedication Schedule

11:30 a.m. - Luxembourg group arrives for potluck lunch with host families, Luxembourg Society
1 p.m. - Shuttle Bus service will begin from St. Peter’s Church parking lot, 1800 N. Wisconsin St.
1:30 p.m. - Musical prelude at the Light Station, 311 Johnson St., Port Washington.
2:00 p.m.- Dedication ceremony. Cake and punch will be served after the ceremony.
3:30 p.m.- Historic tours of downtown area begin and end at American Legion Clubhouse
3:30 p.m.- Open of exhibit of restoration photos and Light Station artifacts at the American Legion Clubhouse.
3:30 p.m. - Food and refreshment stand will open. Port Washington Yacht Club will handle the stand. Proceeds will go to the restoration fund.
4:00 p.m. -Troaterbattien and Ozaukee Big Band concert at Veterans Memorial Park
5:00 p.m.-Shuttle bus service ends
6 p.m. - Cocktails at Country Inn Suites, Seven Hills Drive, Port Washington.
7 p.m. - Gala recognition dinner at Country Inn Suites.
